On our recent visit to Warburton after visiting the snow, we made a quick detour to this unusual attraction just outside the town. The Donna Buang Rainforest Gallery is a small version of one of those canopy walks that you find in tropical rainforests in warmer climates.
Victoria’s temperate rainforests may not be as exotic as the ones in the tropics but they’ve got their own appeal which the Donna Buang Rainforest Gallery makes easy to take in.
The Gallery consists of a platform that goes straight out from the edge of the hill to be 40 metres above the valley floor below. You get a nice view of the mid-level canopy although it’s just a viewing platform.
There is a walking path (on a raised walkway so you’re not trudging through dirt and mud) that goes along the side of the hill for a while which takes you a bit deeper into the forest. Along both the path and at the platform, there are some signs that explain what you’re seeing. Which is handy if you’re like us and would otherwise have no idea.
All up it was a leisurely 30 minute stop. Our eldest son enjoyed it because he’s managed to develop an appreciation for nature, our toddler liked all the steps and the adults liked the walk but the Rainforest Gallery won’t be for everyone. If you’re in the area, though, and want to get outdoors somewhere and burn off some little kid energy it’s worth a stop.
For more information on the Donna Buang Rainforest Gallery see https://www.parks.vic.gov.au/places-to-see/sites/rainforest-gallery-(donna-buang). Entry is free.
Kid friendly: Depends on the kids – our 6yo is more into natural science than our 8yo and found it cool. Our 8yo thought it was boring.
Pram/stroller friendly: No – there’s one short bit that is but the main walkway is ever-changing in level and has a lot of stairs.
Change table: No. There looked to be a public toilet approximately 100m from the car park/entrance.
Getting to the Donna Buang Rainforest Gallery
The Donna Buang Rainforest Gallery is located about 10 minute drive from Warburton. From/In Warburton take the Donna Buang Road (it starts next to the Warburton Motel). At some point you’ll see a road – Acheron Way – branching off to the right as Donna Buang Road does a hairpin turn to the left up the mountain (it’s a bit like a Y intersection). From this intersection the Rainforest Gallery is approximately 50m along Acheron Way. There’s a small car park by the side of the road near the start.
