What Is A Breast Pump?

A breast pump is a mechanical device which is used to help mothers extract milk from their breasts.  A breast pump consists of a suction cup which fits over the mother’s nipple, a funnel and the collection bottle.

Either by manually pumping a handle, or by an electric motor, the pump is designed to mimic the sucking action of the baby to stimulate the milk flow.  The milk then is extracted and flows into the funnel down into the bottle.

Why And When To Use A Breast Pump

There are several reasons why mothers may need to use a breast pump, such as the following circumstances:

  • A mother may be having difficulty keeping up her supply of milk and so expresses milk to increase her milk supply
  • A mother may express milk to keep in the fridge for emergencies
  • If a baby is born premature or is ill and needs to remain in the hospital, the mother may need to express to continue her milk supply or have milk available to her baby in her absence
  • There are times when mothers breasts can become so full of milk that they become painful (engorged breasts) and the only way to ease the pain is by expressing milk
  • When a mother returns to work she may need to express milk during the day to keep up her milk supply or have milk available to her baby in her absence

These are just some of the situations where a mother may need the use of a breast pump.

Choosing The Best Breast Pump 2020

There are various different breast pumps available all with different features.  As to which one is right for you, it does depend on how you plan on using it. For example, will you be using it multiple times per day, or just on the odd occasion?

To ensure you purchase the breast pump that is right for you, spend some time considering your personal circumstances and the various factors below.

Types Of Breast Pump

When it comes to breast pumps, there are three main different types, manual, electric and hospital grade.

Manual/Hand Breast Pumps

A manual breast pump requires the mother to continually squeeze a handle over and over again to make the suction work.

Pros

  • Much cheaper than an electric pump
  • Don’t need a power source to operate
  • Discreet as much smaller and quieter than electric pumps
  • Good for occasional use such as once a day or for a short period of time such as 4 weeks or less
  • Need limited space to store away

Cons

  • Hard work as you need to continually squeeze the handle for the pump to work
  • Takes much longer to express milk than with an electric pump

 Electric Breast Pumps

An electric breast pump works much the same as a manual breast pump, however there is no need to squeeze the pump to make it work, as the pump has a built in motor that does all the work for you.  If you buy electric breast pump it’s good to get one with a few settings enabling the mother to choose their prefered speed and suction level.

Pros

  • Easy to use as no manual movement is required
  • Much faster at extracting milk than a manual pump
  • Both breasts can be pumped at the same time if you have a double breast pump
  • Good for frequent, daily use or for longer periods of time

Cons

  • Far more expensive than a manual breast pump
  • Much larger and noisier than a manual pump so less discreet

Battery-Operated Breast Pumps

A battery operated breast pump, is an electric breast pump that also has either a battery pack or built in batteries which make the device operate.  This makes the pump much more portable as the mother can move about the home as required.

Pros

  • Allows the mother to move around while expressing milk
  • Easy to use as no manual movement is required
  • Much faster at extracting milk than a manual pump
  • Both breasts can be pumped at the same time
  • Good for frequent, daily use or for longer periods of time

Cons

  • Far more expensive than a manual breast pump
  • Much larger and noisier than a manual pump so less discreet

Hospital Grade Breast Pumps

A hospital grade breast pump provides a much stronger suction and a more durable motor than a standard electric pump.  Basically a hospital grade breast pump is the very best electric breast pump you can get. These are large pumps used in hospitals and are available to be hired.

Usually, a hospital grade breast pump is not used unless at the recommendation by a lactation consultant or health care professional.

Pros

  • Easy to use as no manual movement is required
  • Much faster at extracting milk than a manual or standard electric pump
  • Both breasts can be pumped at the same time
  • Good for frequent, daily use or for longer periods of time

Cons

  • Far more expensive than a manual or standard electric breast pump
  • Much larger than a manual pump so less discreet

Single Or Double Pump?

An important factor to consider is whether you’ll need a single or double breast pump.  As the name suggests, a single breast pump only pumps milk from one breast at a time, whereas a double pump expresses milk from both breasts at the same time.  As well as saving time, it’s said that having both breasts expressed at the same time actually increases milk supply by around 18%.

If you only plan to express milk from time to time than a single pump will suffice.  However if expressing milk is going to be a common occurrence for you, then you are much better off investing in a double pump.

Some examples of when a double pump will most certainly be of benefit include feeding twins, expressing milk more than once a day or if you are short on time such as expressing milk during your lunch break at work.

Size / Portability

You’ll want to give some thought to the overall size of the breast pump.  This will be more important if you plan to use it outside of the home, like at work.  If you do need to use it outside of the home, be sure that it’s easy to transport around.  For the best portable breast pump look for one with a built in battery pack so you’re not limited to where you can sit to express milk.

Ease Of Use

Most breast pumps are relatively easy to use, but on the other hand, some can also be overly complicated.  Read other electric and manual breast pump reviews and see what other mothers are saying in terms of how easy the device is to use.

Also look for breast pumps that are easy to take apart for cleaning.  Some parts of your breast pump may even be dishwasher safe which makes for easy cleaning.

Comfort

For maximum comfort and to ensure the device works correctly, you’ll need a breast shield that is the right size for your nipple.  To work effectively, the breast shield needs to stimulate the correct area of the nipple, and this won’t happen if the breast shield is too small or too big.

Most breast pumps come with a one size fits all breast shield.  However, if you don’t think it fits correctly or it’s uncomfortable to wear, check with the manufacturer if they sell other sizes to fit your breasts.  Most often they do – so you don’t have to put up with any unnecessary discomfort while breastfeeding.

Another factor in terms of increasing comfort is a breast pump which has adjustable settings for speed and suction strength.

Nice-To-Have Features

There is a range of different accessories that may come with your breast pump or that you can purchase separately.  Some things you’ll need include BPA free storage bags and feeding bottles and a bottle brush for cleaning the breast shield and bottles.

A travel bag is also a great accessory to have so you have something not only to transport the breast pump in but also to store all the parts away in when not in use.

Breast Pump Cleaning And Safety Tips

It’s important to practice good hygiene when using a breast pump for both the mother and the baby’s sake.  Always begin by washing your hands and ensuring all parts of the device that come in contact with your milk and baby’s mouth are clean.

It’s best to get into the practice of sterilising the breast pump at least once a day.  Be sure to allow all the parts to become completely dry and store away all parts in a sealed container until you’re ready to use it.

Also always ensure all plastic pump parts which come into contact with the milk are BPA free as well as only use bottles which are BPA free.
